Senne Lammens admits Man Utd ‘not good enough’ after Newcastle loss, reveals dressing room frustration

Manchester United’s goalkeeper Senne Lammens has openly criticized the squad’s underwhelming performance in a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United, labeling it a “collective off day.” This result marked the first loss for interim manager Michael Carrick since taking charge seven weeks ago.

Despite an advantage when Newcastle had a player sent off, United failed to capitalize, with Lammens expressing frustration over their inability to maintain momentum in the Champions League race. He noted that the team did not take Carrick’s pre-match warnings seriously.

“It’s a significant disappointment. We anticipated it would be tough… The manager warned us,” Lammens stated. “The first half wasn’t ideal, yet we went into halftime feeling somewhat positive after scoring just before the break.”

In the second half, United couldn’t exploit their numerical advantage, with Lammens highlighting a lack of competitive spirit as the key factor for the defeat.

“The manager cautioned us that it would be challenging… the longer it stays 1-1, it only takes one chance. That’s exactly what happened today. We were nowhere near good enough in any aspect, and we must learn from this,” he emphasized.

Discussing the team’s performance, Lammens pointed out that elite clubs cannot afford to have days of collective underachievement.

“The physicality and effort were lacking. A performance like this isn’t acceptable, not in this league and not against teams like this,” he added.

With no European commitments momentarily, United’s next match is against Aston Villa on March 15. Although sitting third in the Premier League standings, Carrick’s squad needs to regroup after this disappointing outing.

“Today was a real letdown, and the mood isn’t great. We have a few days and will need to reflect on how to respond,” Lammens concluded. “Starting tomorrow, we must maintain our intensity in training to ensure we perform better in the upcoming games.”
