Music producer and CEO of Lynx Group Limited, Richie Mensah, has shared how he faced strong criticism for choosing a career in music instead of becoming a doctor. Speaking on Changes with Roselyn Felli on Joy Prime, Richie revealed that he made the bold decision at just 17 years old, despite doing well in school and being expected to study medicine.

According to Richie, his decision shocked many people, including his family and community. “I had a conversation with my mum after senior high school and told her I wanted to do music,” he said. “Everyone thought I was too young and wasting my future.”

He also explained that his mother received harsh backlash for supporting his choice. “People insulted her and said she was letting me throw my life away. They couldn’t understand why I would choose music over medicine.”

Despite the negativity, Richie stayed focused. His first single “Yaro” was his way of responding to critics. “People didn’t believe I’d succeed, so I made ‘Yaro’ to prove them wrong. It means ‘small boy’ in Hausa, and I was saying, ‘They think I’m just a small boy, but I’m proving them wrong.’”

Today, Richie is one of Ghana’s top music producers and a key figure in the industry. His story is a powerful reminder that following your passion—even when others don’t understand—can lead to success.
