The Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a junior footballer at Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, who was allegedly sexually abused by his coach.

According to a statement from the Police Public Affairs Directorate, preliminary investigations revealed that Owusu’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported to the Amasaman Police that her son had fallen ill and passed away on February 28, 2025. She claimed that prior to his death, Ransford had confided in her that his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually assaulted him.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. The police said Anyass Ibrahim was arrested on November 4, 2025, to assist with investigations. He was interrogated, provided a statement, and later granted bail, with a requirement to report regularly to the CID Headquarters.

A review of medical documents submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Kumasi indicated that Ransford had been treated for liver and kidney-related conditions prior to his death.

Police stated that efforts are ongoing to obtain official medical reports from both hospitals, following previous refusals to release them. A court order has since been secured to compel the release of the records.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, the police said.
