“Only one team tried to play football” – Brighton boss takes another dig at Arsenal and Mikel Arteta with new time-wasting complaint as Gunners secure narrow win

Tensions soared between Brighton and Arsenal after the Gunners clinched a hard-fought victory at the Amex Stadium, igniting a fierce response from Seagulls manager Fabian Hurzeler, who accused the visitors of cynically manipulating the game rules.

Arsenal maintained their pursuit of the Premier League title with a narrow victory, courtesy of Bukayo Saka’s early goal. This win solidified their position at the top, extending their lead to seven points following Manchester City’s draw with Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Brighton remains in 13th place.

Despite the loss of William Saliba due to injury, Arsenal’s defensive fortitude was commendable. Match statistics reflected Brighton’s superiority in possession and shots, with the home side dominating the attack.

Following the match, Hurzeler expressed frustration over the game’s tempo, suggesting Arsenal arrived to disrupt rather than entertain. He highlighted Brighton’s dominant performance, emphasizing, “Only one team was trying to play football today,” and alluded to missed opportunities in their own attacking play.

Hurzeler’s post-match comments echoed his pre-match concerns regarding Arsenal’s tactics. He asserted that the Gunners consistently took advantage of the rules, slowing the game with prolonged stoppages. Dissecting the match, he remarked, “If they do win the title, no one will ask how they achieved it.” The Brighton manager pointed at frequent medical breaks that hindered the flow of the game.

For Mikel Arteta, the three points were paramount, overshadowing any criticism regarding style. In a challenging away match, the Gunners displayed resilience and tactical acumen, particularly after introducing Kai Havertz in the second half, which provided the team with crucial control against a pressing Brighton side. Arteta remains focused on securing results, intent on bringing the Premier League trophy back to the Emirates Stadium.
