A German court has sentenced a nurse to life imprisonment for killing 10 patients and attempting to murder 27 others by administering lethal doses of sedatives and painkillers.
The crimes, which occurred between December 2023 and May 2024, took place at a palliative care unit in Würselen, near the city of Aachen in western Germany.
According to prosecutors, the 37-year-old nurse deliberately injected patients with overdoses of drugs to reduce his workload during night shifts. He was arrested in mid-2024 after several suspicious deaths were reported in his unit.
The court ruled that the offender acted with “particular severity of guilt,” a classification under German law that bars any possibility of early release after 15 years — meaning he is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison.
Investigators said the convict had worked at the hospital since 2020 and used his medical training to manipulate medication doses without immediate detection. Authorities are also reviewing other cases linked to his shifts to determine whether the death toll could be higher.
