Inter Miami’s visit to the White House aligns with a tradition where championship-winning teams are recognized by the President. The Columbus Crew were the last MLS team invited after winning the MLS Cup in 2023, while the LA Galaxy did not attend following their success in 2024.
President Trump addressed the team, saying, “We’re honoring truly talented people. Welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi.”
Midfielder Telasco Segovia downplayed any political implications of the visit, stating, “We are going because we are champions from last season. I don’t get involved with politics.”
During the event, Trump praised Messi’s accomplishments, noting, “Welcome, Lionel Messi, to the White House… I don’t know, you may be better [than Pelé].” He also highlighted the pressure faced by Messi after joining Inter Miami and still managing to secure the title.
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas emphasized the significance of the occasion, saying, “We can play with the big boys… Our league can be one of the top leagues in the world.” He expressed hope that this would not be the team’s last visit to the White House.
The event concluded with Inter Miami presenting President Trump with a signed ball and jersey. This marked Messi’s first visit to the White House. Although he was invited by former President Joe Biden in 2025 to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he was unable to attend.
