Two Ghanaian soldiers deployed on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Southern Lebanon have sustained critical injuries following a missile attack on their base. The assault comes amid heightened tensions between Israeli forces and the militant group Hezbollah.
In a statement released on March 6, 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters, operating under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was targeted during ongoing clashes in the region.
The attack occurred within a brief timeframe, with missiles striking the base between 5:45 PM and 5:52 PM local time. The military reported that two soldiers were critically injured, while a third peacekeeper suffered trauma as a result of the incident.
“Two soldiers are critically injured, while one other has been traumatized,” the statement noted. Beyond the injuries, the attack caused significant destruction to infrastructure within the Ghanaian camp, including the destruction of the Officers’ Mess facility, which was engulfed in flames.
Currently, the injured personnel are being treated at a medical facility within the UN base and are reported to be stable. “The injured are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable while arrangements are underway for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital,” the military added.
In light of the attack, the Ghana Armed Forces reassured the public that the remaining troops at the base are safe. “The Ghana Armed Forces assures the general public to remain calm amidst the fragile situation as troops are currently safe in underground bunkers,” the statement emphasized.

The Ghanaian government has also reacted diplomatically, formally protesting the attack at the United Nations headquarters in New York through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect international obligations regarding the safety of peacekeeping personnel.
The military further called on the conflicting parties in the region to exercise restraint and protect UN peacekeepers operating in the area. This incident arises amidst renewed violence and exchanges of fire in Southern Lebanon, where UN peacekeeping forces continue to monitor the volatile border between Israel and Hezbollah.
Historically, Ghana has been a prominent contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts, dispatching troops to various conflict zones worldwide.
