The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, has been directed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament to refund GH¢113,000 to the state within 90 days.
The directive follows revelations at the ongoing PAC hearings that the hospital paid two separate judgment debt compensations arising from cases of negligence. One involved the death of a patient due to an overdose of medication, while the other stemmed from a mix-up of mortal remains, which required the exhumation and reburial of a body.
According to the committee, the hospital had attempted to recover the amount from staff whose actions led to the debts, but these efforts had failed. The PAC insisted that the money must not remain a burden on public finances and therefore ordered Dr. Adam to ensure the refund is made.
The committee stressed that negligence leading to financial loss cannot be overlooked, adding that public institutions must strengthen their supervisory systems to prevent such costly errors.
This latest directive forms part of the PAC’s broader scrutiny of state institutions, as it continues its hearings to enforce accountability and safeguard taxpayer resources.
