Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called on board members across Ghana to move beyond seeing their roles as ceremonial or symbolic, emphasizing that board service must be rooted in leadership, strategy, and accountability.
Speaking at the Jubilee House during a courtesy visit by the Boardroom Governance Institute, Mr. Debrah said too many institutions suffer from weak board oversight, which often results in poor performance or institutional collapse.
“Board membership is not just about prestige or titles,” he stated. “It is about providing direction, ensuring transparency, and taking responsibility for the health and future of the institution.”
He stressed that without a clear strategic vision and active involvement, boards risk becoming rubber stamps rather than drivers of growth and good governance.
Mr. Debrah further encouraged board members to deepen their understanding of governance principles, financial accountability, and risk management. He praised the work of the Boardroom Governance Institute for its efforts to promote ethical leadership and professional board practices in both the public and private sectors.
The visit formed part of the Institute’s engagement with key national stakeholders to promote stronger boardroom culture and build leadership capacity.
With many public institutions facing governance challenges, Mr. Debrah’s remarks serve as a timely reminder that effective boards are essential to institutional resilience and national development.
