I never experience depression because i don’t smoke – Edem.

Edem, a well renowned ghanaian musician, shared insights into his mental health and how he has managed to avoid depression. In an interview on Joy Prime, the ‘Gbevu’ rapper revealed that he has never experienced depression in his life, he attributed this to his lifestyle choices.

He emphasized that he abstains from consistent weed smoking and alcohol consumption, which he believes have contributed significantly to his mental well-being. Edem stated, “I have never been depressed. I’ve had low moments in life, but I’ve never been depressed. I think the reason is because I don’t smoke weed or do any of those things. I don’t smoke cigarettes, and I’m not a heavy drinker. I feel that for you to go into depression, you need to engage in those activities that push you into that space.”

Instead of smoking, Edem pointed out that he prefers engaging in healthy activities, particularly emphasizing his preference for sex. He added, “I prefer sex to smoking and any other thing because it’s healthier. If I’m in a space for a week and not doing anything, once or twice [having sex] a day is fine. If I’m in Ghana working, when the opportunity presents itself, I do it for the sake of the family.”

When he was asked if he is addicted to sex, Edem responded by saying he can’t be addicted to anything because his belief is that anything one is addicted to becomes their God. Depression is a medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. It’s like a cancer, it sucks all the happiness in you that you can’t help but feel sad continuously. Most of our youth are either self diagnosed or medically diagnosed with depression, word on the street is that one third of every group of the youth of this country are experiencing depression.

Avoiding substances like weed, alcohol, and cigarettes can support mental health. When feeling depressed, focus on positive thoughts or engage in enjoyable activities to fight it. Depression can worsen if you dwell on negative emotions.
