Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the violent incidents that erupted during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, describing them as a deep betrayal of Ghana’s democratic values.
Speaking over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia expressed disappointment over the chaos that marred what should have been a peaceful and transparent electoral process. According to him, the scenes of physical assaults, voter intimidation, and open lawlessness at polling stations represented a serious threat to the country’s democratic gains.
“This is not the Ghana we’ve worked so hard to build,” Dr. Bawumia said. “The violence in Ablekuma North was not only shameful, it was a betrayal of the trust. Ghanaians place in our democracy. We cannot sit quietly while such acts become normal.”
Reports from the rerun indicate that several individuals, including former Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson and NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, were attacked by thugs allegedly aligned with political interests. Disturbingly, the violence occurred in broad daylight, with little to no immediate police intervention.
Dr. Bawumia has called on President John Mahama and security agencies to take urgent action, stressing that silence or inaction would send the wrong signal ahead of the 2026 general elections. He urged law enforcement to identify and prosecute those involved, regardless of their political affiliations.
“The future of our democracy depends on accountability,” he said. “We must protect the sanctity of the vote.”
As investigations continue, the public and observers are watching closely to see whether justice will follow
