Baba Jamal, the newly elected Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency, is set to be sworn in on Tuesday, March 10.
The swearing-in ceremony will be officiated by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, within the parliamentary chambers. Mr. Jamal secured his parliamentary seat during the by-election held on March 3, representing a significant victory for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The election saw a competitive field, including candidates from various political parties and one independent contender. In a Facebook announcement on March 9, Mr. Jamal expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the constituents for entrusting him with the responsibility of representation.
“Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to collaborating with you to shape a brighter and more prosperous future for the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he stated. According to the official election results, Mr. Jamal garnered 10,884 votes, defeating his primary challenger, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,009 votes.
Additional candidates included independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda, who earned 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu and Kanor David received 43 and 104 votes, respectively.
