The United States has slashed the validity period of most non-immigrant visas issued to Ghanaians to just three months, with single entry. The new policy, which took effect on July 8, affects tourist, business, student, and exchange visas. Previously, Ghanaians could access multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years. Now, applicants must reapply for each trip, significantly increasing costs and uncertainty. U.S. authorities say the decision is based on reciprocity ensuring Ghana offers American citizens comparable visa terms. However, officials also cite high overstay rates among Ghanaian visa holders, especially students. Data shows that over 20 percent of Ghanaian…
Lesotho is in a state of economic and political anxiety following the United States’ threat to impose tariffs on textile imports from several African nations, including Lesotho. The possible policy shift has triggered widespread concern in the tiny Southern African kingdom, whose economy heavily relies on garment exports to the U.S. market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). At the heart of the concern is Lesotho’s multibillion-maloti apparel sector, which employs over 40,000 workers mostly women and accounts for more than 80% of the country’s manufacturing exports. The potential tariffs, reportedly under review as part of a broader…

According to Dr. Otokunor, the new policy aims to protect the local shea industry, encourage domestic processing, and create sustainable jobs, especially for women who dominate the shea value chain in northern Ghana. “Exporting raw shea is like exporting potential…
Consumer advocacy group CUTS International has criticized the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for charging students between GH₵15 and GH₵25 to check their BECE and WASSCE results online. The group described the 21-year-old practice as “exploitative and unjustified,” urging the Council to end what it calls an unfair burden on students. According to CUTS, students already pay significant fees to register for the exams, and asking them to pay again just to view their results makes no sense. “After students complete their exams, the least WAEC can do is give them free access to their performance,” the group stated. CUTS…
