Apple Music adds optional labels for AI songs and visuals

Apple is implementing a new initiative for its music streaming platform, Apple Music, aimed at enhancing transparency around AI-generated content. The company is encouraging artists and record labels to voluntarily use a system of “Transparency Tags” to identify songs produced with artificial intelligence, as detailed in a recent newsletter to industry associates.

This new tagging system involves four categories: track, composition, artwork, and music videos. The “track” tag should be applied when a significant component of a sound recording is created through AI, while the “composition” tag encompasses any AI-generated elements of songwriting, such as lyrics. For album artwork, a separate tag applies, and for visual content not related directly to the album, the music video tag is designated.

Apple stated that these tags are a “concrete first step” towards promoting industry-wide transparency concerning AI in music. The responsibility for applying the tags lies with the record labels and distributors, who are expected to actively report any AI involvement in the content they distribute.

This move follows similar initiatives by rival streaming services designed to safeguard genuine artists from being misrepresented and to help listeners easily detect AI-generated music. For instance, Spotify is working with DDEX on a standard for AI music disclosures, while Deezer has made its AI detection tool available to other platforms. Qobuz also introduced its own AI detection approach recently.

However, unlike Deezer and Qobuz, which have established proactive systems, Apple’s Transparency Tags remain optional at this stage, placing the onus of disclosure entirely on content providers. Apple clarified that it would not assume any AI involvement in work that is not tagged by the providers.

The effectiveness of such voluntary labeling practices remains a topic of debate, as previous attempts at similar initiatives have lacked enforcement. As it stands, many are questioning the incentive structure for artists and labels to adopt this new tagging system actively.
