Akwaba Magic, a prominent Ghanaian digital satellite television channel, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a commitment to delivering more engaging local productions for its viewers.

Owned by MultiChoice Ghana Limited, this 24-hour entertainment channel continues to stand firm in its dedication to promoting authentic Ghanaian narratives and fostering the development of the nation’s creative sector.
The anniversary celebration, held at the MultiChoice Ghana headquarters, gathered key figures from the industry, including actors, directors, producers, and emerging talents, all recognizing five years of significant contributions Akwaba Magic has made to local content on DStv.
Launched in March 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Akwaba Magic was designed as a high-quality platform devoted entirely to Ghanaian content. Over the years, the channel has provided an impressive catalogue of drama series, reality shows, and films, while also collaborating with independent producers across the country.
“Our vision was to create a reliable space where Ghanaian stories, languages, and talents could flourish, reflecting our cultural identity and providing filmmakers with exceptional opportunities,” said Alex Okyere, Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana Limited.
Actors in the industry have emphasized the channel’s vital role in enhancing the creative landscape. Jessica Larny, a film actor, shared her perspective on the hurdles faced by creatives prior to Akwaba Magic’s inception, especially during the downtime caused by the pandemic.
Nosisa Doe, Head of Channel for Akwaba Magic, highlighted the channel’s influence in reviving local storytelling. She noted that productions like “House of Klu,” “Nana Akoto,” “M’asaase,” and “Sika Boto” effectively merge tradition with modern relevance, showcasing rich narratives that connect generations and foster national pride in Ghana’s culture.
James Gardiner, Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, praised Akwaba Magic for revitalizing Ghana’s creative ecosystem. He emphasized that the channel’s investment in original programming has not only created jobs but also inspired confidence among creatives, providing a dependable platform for innovation and growth.
Beyond mere entertainment, stakeholders attest that Akwaba Magic has revitalized appreciation for Ghanaian storytelling, enhancing the country’s standing in the broader African entertainment landscape.
As it embarks on this new chapter, Akwaba Magic has committed to further collaboration with local producers and increased investment in original content, aiming to broaden the global reach of Ghanaian stories.
