The Moroccan Football Federation has confirmed that Walid Regragui has resigned as head coach, just months before the World Cup in North America. This decision comes after a tense period of scrutiny following the team’s previous performances.
Regragui’s successor, Mohamed Ouahbi, has been promoted from his role overseeing the Under-20 team, bringing with him a wealth of experience, having led Morocco’s U-20 squad to the 2025 World Cup title.
At a press conference, Regragui expressed his desire for a new direction for the national squad, stating the need for fresh energy and perspectives. He emphasized that this change was critical for the team’s growth as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup. “The team needs a new lease of life,” he noted, highlighting the importance of evolving as a unit to continue making strides.
Despite his commendable achievements, including reaching the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, Regragui faced criticism for his tactical approach during the Africa Cup of Nations. His decision to resign came amid mounting pressure from the public and the federation, reflecting a broader dissatisfaction following the team’s performance on home soil.
Taking the helm, Ouahbi faces significant challenges as the squad gears up for Group C matches against formidable opponents such as Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland. Known for emphasizing both discipline and attacking flair, Ouahbi is tasked with blending these attributes to enhance the team’s performance.
The Atlas Lions’ next matches include friendly encounters with Ecuador and Paraguay later this month, where Ouahbi will look to harness the momentum from their recent form to build confidence leading into the World Cup.
