La Liga’s Rafa Mir could spend more than ten years behind bars if convicted of alleged rape

Elche CF forward Rafa Mir is currently entangled in a serious legal battle that could result in a prison sentence of over ten years. Spanish prosecutors have officially requested a sentence of 10 years and six months following allegations of a sexual assault involving a 21-year-old woman in September 2024. At the time, Mir was on loan at Valencia. The situation has escalated significantly, creating uncertainty for the player’s professional career.

According to reports, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a substantial sentence for Mir, who stands accused of aggravated sexual assault and inflicting physical injuries on the victim. The suggested sentence includes nine years for the primary charge and an additional 18 months for the injuries suffered by the alleged victim. Following his arrest in early September 2024, Mir was processed by the courts in October 2025, during which he chose not to testify, leading to the current legal developments.

In addition to potential jail time, the prosecution is advocating for protective measures to ensure the victim’s safety. If found guilty, Mir would be forbidden from coming within 500 meters of the victim for 13 years and subject to seven years of supervised release post-incarceration. The prosecution has also demanded a compensation payment of €64,000 for moral and physical damages.

This case comes on the heels of other recent controversies involving Mir. In a separate incident, Espanyol player Omar El Hilali accused him of using a racial slur during a match, raising further scrutiny and pressure for Elche CF as they navigate these serious allegations. The club, which has signed Mir on loan from Sevilla, is managing the public relations implications while competing in La Liga.

Presently, Mir remains eligible to participate in matches as he awaits trial. However, his long-term future in professional football hangs in the balance, with both Elche and Sevilla monitoring the situation closely. A conviction would likely lead to the immediate termination of his contracts. As the story develops, the pressure from fans and human rights organizations for disciplinary actions within the club is anticipated to increase.
