Here’s how Google describes its fee-reducing Apps Experience and Games Level Up programs

In a significant move, Google has decided to eliminate its controversial 30% app store fee. This decision comes in the wake of a court ruling in the United States labeling its practices as monopolistic… Starting this July, the company will charge developers a reduced fee of 20% for in-app purchases and only 10% for subscriptions, depending on the location of the developers.

This shift not only impacts existing app categories but also introduces new ones. Notably, Google has announced a new category for “metaverse browsers,” though specifics about this section remain undisclosed. Alongside this, Google aims to reward developers who optimize their apps to function seamlessly across various platforms, including XR headsets, Android TVs, and PCs, through their Apps Experience and Games Level Up programs.

These new programs could potentially allow developers to retain an additional 5% of their revenue, contingent upon meeting certain criteria such as delivering high-quality experiences across multiple devices.

Google spokesperson Dan Jackson indicated that more details about these initiatives will be unveiled soon, highlighting the company’s efforts to adapt to evolving market conditions and developer needs.

The Games Level Up program lays out comprehensive requirements for game developers, including quality standards that must be met across multiple devices by 2026. Similarly, the Apps Experience program requires applications to maintain a consistent user experience across various form factors.

These updates signal Google’s response to industry pressures and legal challenges, reflecting a broader trend towards fairer revenue-sharing practices in digital markets. As new regulations roll out globally—hitting the UK and Europe by September 2026 and reaching other regions by 2027—developers are closely watching to see how these changes will reshape the app ecosystem.

Google’s revised fee structure and program implementations mark a pivotal change in how apps will be developed and monetized on its platform. As the landscape evolves, both developers and users will benefit from more flexible options in the digital marketplace.
