As March rolls in, the U.S. Men’s National Team finds itself gearing up for its last pre-World Cup assembly. The competition for roster spots is heating up, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino stating that consistent high-level performances can earn any player a place on the squad. Thus, understanding trends in player performance and formation at the club level is crucial for assembling a successful team.

After overcoming a challenging period plagued by injuries, Johnny Cardoso is finding his footing at Atlético Madrid. Since mid-January, the young midfielder has started nearly every match in La Liga, contributing significantly as Atlético gathered 13 points from a possible 18. Notably, he has adapted seamlessly to partnering with different midfielders, with coach Diego Simeone praising his ball recovery and overall stabilization of the team’s play.

His standout moment came in the Champions League against Club Brugge, where he scored his first goal for Atlético, helping secure a crucial victory that advanced the team to the round of 16. However, questions linger regarding Cardoso’s place in the national team, as he seeks to deliver a standout performance worthy of a starting spot.

In the English Championship, Patrick Agyemang is proving to be a formidable force for Derby County. With 10 league goals and three assists in his debut season, he’s catching the eye of Premier League scouts. Despite consistently drawing fouls—17 in his last four matches—Agyemang is learning to navigate the physical nature of the league. Derby’s management acknowledges his talent and the need for additional protection from officiating, highlighting his growing reputation as a player to watch.

Weston McKennie continues to carve out his legacy at Juventus. His recent goal against Galatasaray marked his fourth in the Champions League this season, making him the club’s top scorer in European play. This milestone places him among Juventus legends, as he becomes only the third midfielder in club history to score ten or more goals in the Champions League. McKennie’s contributions reflect his integral role at Juventus, affirming the club’s decision to reward him with a new contract.

Croatian legend Ivan Rakitic recently urged U.S. coach Pochettino to call up Rokas Pukstas, highlighting the Hajduk Split midfielder’s impressive performances. Recently, Pukstas showcased his talent by winning 17 duels in a match, demonstrating both physicality and creativity. As a former U.S. youth international, Pukstas is growing, and if Rakitic’s endorsement resonates, he may soon be on the radar for senior national team selection.

With players like Cardoso, Agyemang, McKennie, and Pukstas making waves abroad, the landscape of American soccer is rich with potential as the national team prepares for the World Cup ahead.
