The Government of Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the People’s Republic of China to construct a modern market in Aflao, Volta Region. The project aims to boost cross-border trade and improve commercial activities in the busy border town.
Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond confirmed the grant during a recent meeting with a Chinese delegation in Accra. He described the market as a vital investment that will improve trading conditions, especially for women, who make up the majority of traders in the area.
“This market is more than infrastructure. It will improve livelihoods, create jobs, and provide a safer space for business,” he said.
The Aflao Market will feature lockable shops, cold storage, a clinic, sanitation facilities, and ample parking space. Once completed, it is expected to attract traders from across Ghana and neighboring Togo, strengthening Ghana’s position as a trade hub in the sub-region.
Chinese Ambassador Lu Kun reaffirmed his country’s support for Ghana’s development goals. He said the market reflects the strong cooperation between the two countries and shows China’s commitment to supporting key infrastructure projects that benefit local communities.
Construction is expected to begin later this year after design approvals and stakeholder consultations. Local leaders have praised the initiative, calling it timely and transformative.
The Aflao project adds to several Chinese-backed developments across Ghana and marks another step toward improving economic infrastructure in underserved areas.
