Award-winning gospel singer Diana Hamilton has opened up about her surprising career journey—from dreaming of architecture to becoming a nurse and, eventually, a celebrated musician.
In an interview on The Career Trail on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, Diana shared that her childhood passion for technical drawing made her believe she was destined to be an architect.
“I thought I’d be an architect because I was really good at technical drawing. Nursing wasn’t part of the plan,” she said.
However, after completing Ghana National College, her career path changed unexpectedly when a family friend suggested she pursue nursing—and her father agreed. Surprisingly, Diana didn’t resist the idea.
Looking back, she realized her interest in nursing was planted earlier during junior high school, when her aunt, a nurse suffering from breast cancer, came to live with them.
“She was everything I admired—elegant, professional, and even in her pain, she taught me how to care for her. I didn’t know she was planting the seed,” Diana recounted.
That experience became the heart of her response during her interview for nursing school at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
“I said I wanted to be like my aunt—she was beautiful, fashionable, and dedicated. She passed from breast cancer, but left a mark on me,” she added.
Diana went on to become a registered nurse, eventually practicing in the UK, where her music career began to flourish. She revealed that frequent travels for gigs made it hard to continue nursing in Ghana.
“I did my rotation at Korle Bu, but traveling back and forth to the UK was exhausting. So I stayed,” she explained.
From aspiring architect to caregiver to gospel star, Diana Hamilton’s journey is a powerful reminder that purpose often finds us—even when we least expect it.
