In a significant crackdown on illegal mining activities, the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response Unit, in collaboration with the Bekwai Forest District, has apprehended 23 miners along the Oda River in the Ashanti Region. This operation took place in areas such as Aburokyere, Bepotenten, and Sukuumu in the Amansie Central District, leading to the capture of the suspects, including four women.

Authorities seized a substantial amount of mining equipment during the operation, including 82 Changfan machines, 77 pumping devices, and 21 motorbikes believed to have been utilized in these unauthorized mining activities. Additionally, 20 structures erected by the miners were destroyed in an effort to reclaim the area.

This task force comprised 31 personnel from the Rapid Response Unit, seven forest guards, two Forest Resource Management officers, and one District Development Manager, working together to tackle the growing threat posed by illegal mining operations.

The pollution of the Oda River, a vital water source for the surrounding ecosystem, has reached alarming levels, primarily due to these mining activities. As a result, local farmers have been significantly affected, facing challenges in accessing clean water essential for irrigation and farming, ultimately forcing many out of work.

The authorities’ actions reflect a dedicated effort to restore the Oda River’s health and protect the livelihoods of local communities dependent on it. The government continues to address this vital issue, ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations.
