The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the tragic shooting of a queenmother during a naming ceremony at Gbawe Zero, a suburb of the capital.

According to police sources, the suspect was apprehended late Monday evening following a swift intelligence-led operation. His name is being withheld for investigative purposes.

The incident occurred over the weekend when the queenmother, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, attended a community naming ceremony. Witnesses say chaos broke out after gunshots were fired during what was meant to be a celebratory moment. The queenmother was hit by a bullet and pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as “devastating,” with residents running for cover as the shots rang out. “No one expected anything like this. It was a joyful event turned into mourning,” a resident told local media.

Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a personal conflict, although the exact motive remains unclear. Police say the suspect is currently assisting with investigations and will be arraigned soon.

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm while they complete their inquiries. It also assured residents of Gbawe Zero that security in the area has been tightened.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the community, with traditional leaders and residents calling for swift justice and tighter controls on the possession and use of firearms at public gatherings.
