Former musician and Ghanaian MP A-Plus reveals his monthly parliamentary salary, claiming that he earned more in a single day before entering politics. He considers the difficulties of legislative work and commends MPs for their commitment.
Gomoa Central’s Independent Member of Parliament (MP), Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-Plus, has revealed his salary as a Ghanaian lawmaker. The politician, who was once a musician and political activist, claimed that although he was committed to helping his constituents, the salary was not enough.
A-Plus emphasized the taxing nature of parliamentary work in an interview with Adom FM on Thursday, April 3, 2025, stating that his monthly salary, after all deductions, was only GH₵15,000.
For me, my main focus is solving people’s problems. That’s why I started the People’s Project—to help people. I don’t see it as an issue; I will if someone approaches me with a concern and knows I can help. But being an MP is extremely difficult, and the salary is not good enough. At the end of the month, you receive just GH₵15,000, he explained.
When A-Plus looked at his financial situation before becoming a member of parliament, it showed that he was making a lot more money in his private life than he does now. He asserted that in the past, his daily income had surpassed his entire monthly parliamentary salary.
It’s evident from my 2020 bank statements that I was earning significantly more money prior to going into politics. “I could make more money in a day than I currently make in a month as an MP,” he said.
The MP acknowledged that his opinion of the legislative chamber had changed since joining, but he also commended the work of his fellow lawmakers. He admitted that he had previously underestimated the workload and responsibilities of MPs, as had many other outsiders.
I used to have a different perspective on things, but now I see how much work MPs truly do. One day, I’ll post my bank statement online to demonstrate the difference. Even though the workload is massive, the amount I used to earn in a single day from my business was more than my current monthly salary in Parliament. MPs are performing admirably.
Following the general elections in December 2024, A-Plus is one of several new members of Ghana’s ninth Parliament. Actor John Dumelo, businesswoman Joana Gyan Cudjoe, and businessman Ohene Kwame Frimpong are among the other prominent individuals who joined him in the legislature.
