    In a passionate speech to the United Nations General Assembly on September 20, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for tougher sanctions on Russia and the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Moscow for war crimes.

    Zelenskyy began his speech by condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “a crime against humanity.” He described the atrocities that have been committed by Russian forces, including the bombing of civilian areas, the execution of prisoners of war, and the rape of women and children.

    “Russia has shown the world that it is a terrorist state,” Zelenskyy said. “It has no place in the international community.”

    Zelenskyy urged the world to take stronger action to punish Russia for its crimes. He called for tougher sanctions, including a ban on all Russian oil and gas exports. He also called for the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian leaders for war crimes.

    “Russia must be held accountable for its actions,” Zelenskyy said. “We must send a clear message that impunity for aggression will not be tolerated.”

    Zelenskyy also called for the world to continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia. He urged countries to provide Ukraine with more weapons and financial assistance.

    “We will not surrender,” Zelenskyy said. “We will fight until we liberate our land and bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.”

    Zelenskyy’s speech was met with a standing ovation from the delegates to the General Assembly. His words were a powerful reminder of the human cost of Russia’s war in Ukraine and the need for the world to take action to stop it.
